Dear Self,

I really care about democracy.

It has snuck up on me how much it matters to me.

I want to understand how it works. And I’d like to live in a country where people are proud of their politicians and political system.

I’m most worried about how the way we consumer information impacts upon how we all feel about politics and politicians.

There is something heartbreaking to me about how effective spin and polarisation are in terms of winning the popular opinion.

I’m concerned that, because of how we interact with information now, fear is becoming easier to use to rally people to act against their own interests.

How can we have a healthy democracy at this particular moment of history?

I really care about democracy…because, when it is done properly, it gives almost everyone living in a society a voice.

And that’s fair, that’s how it should be.

Democracy really matters.

At any election it is most important that democracy wins.

Dear Self,

Distraction.

A useful technique for when things are too heavy to think about.

Not a long term strategy.

But for a moment, ok…I think.

Dear Self,

Nothing soothes heartbreak.

Only time.

Letting it move along.

So it isn’t so fresh.

But when it’s alive...

Nothing soothes heartbreak.

Dear Self,

Can I just say that I am very relieved to have got through the last few months in the way that I have?

And I’m also quietly proud of all the things I’ve achieved in the last few years.

I am very quick to reflect on my failings. To pour over them and find my faults, to invest my time in trying to make a better version of myself.

All very valuable and important.

But sometimes it’s got to be ok to celebrate my achievements.

Otherwise it is all just too much hard work.

Dear Self,

The wall is the wall is the wall.

Once it is reached, or rather, once it is hit…there’s not much to do other than go easy and be kind.

Dear Self,

There are things that I am that I cannot see.

At least not properly.

What’s ‘really’ me and what is not?

Can I know, and does it matter?

Good sleep.

Good sleep. Drawing Luke Hockley

Dear Self,

Last night I sat on the couch and wrote out all the things I was churning over so that I could get into bed and have a solid night’s sleep.

It was part of my strategy to become better, much better, at sleeping.

It worked.

I can’t believe it, but it did.

I hit the sack and felt a protective bubble around me that helped me sleep (some strange dreams…but that’s workable).

I woke up early and the things started to churn.

I tried to get the protective cocoon in place again…but eventually decided to get up and keep that stuff out of bed.

I’m so pleased that I could get a separation to work.

Getting good sleep is a precious thing.

I’m working on becoming a sleep master.

How I get where I’m going.

How I get where I’m going. Drawing Luke Hockley

Dear Self,

The Alexander Technique has been an amazing study for me in focusing on how I get to the places I am going, rather than being fixated purely on the place I’m getting to.

This is one of those things that sounds incredibly obvious and reasonably simple to achieve…and yet is so often impossible to catch myself when I’m fixated on outcomes and then, when I do manage to choose to focus more on the process of the thing I’m doing…well it is a slow process to change the ‘how’ of what I am doing.

Habits are so strong.

Even when they are things that cause me discomfort and don’t serve me well they are still familiar and ‘comfortable’. Changing this kind of thing takes real attention to the moment.

I’m knitting socks at the moment…and there is something that I do with my left hand as I knit that, after a little while, starts to hurt.

I know what I’m doing, but it is incredibly hard to change it.

The pathway is just so strong.

It takes time and attention.

And an ability to hold the end goal incredibly lightly.

That’s all.

Dear Self,

I’m so damn proud of the people around me being so damned awesome.

Feeling things and being messy and learning about themselves and just generally being real.

It makes me feel like I can keep trying to do the same thing for myself.

Enough. Drawing Luke Hockley

Dear Self,

I’ve had enough of doing things that I choose to do because I like the bigger outcome but are actually a bit of a drag to do.

Enough already.
