Finishing

Enjoying all the things.

Dear Self,

I have a lot to do and only a limited number of days to do it in.

And, I’d like to enjoy all those things.

Ok, that’s good to note. All these things are things I have chosen to do. They all make the world a better place, so – well worth the effort.

Then, once they are all done, I’m going on a holiday!

So, do lots of great things you love and then go on a holiday and have fun.

No problems.

Love

Luke

Don’t throw the buttonhole out.

Don’t throw the buttonhole out. Drawing Luke Hockley.

Dear Self,

I’m learning how to sew a buttonhole.

Or, rather, I’m learning a new way to sew a buttonhole.

Originally, I kind of made it up…I did a hand version of what I had seen a sewing machine do.

It was ok…but clumsy, or I thought there must be a better way or something like that. So, I found some instructions in a needle craft book of Mum’s on how to sew a button hole.

So far it is incredibly clumsy, and I don’t like it at all.

But I think I need to persist a bit longer.

I feel like a bit of repetition will help me see if I don’t like it because I’m not familiar and skilled enough or because it is actually awkward.

Let’s not throw the buttonhole out before it’s had a chance.

Luke

Taking care of home.

Taking care of home. Drawing Luke Hockley.

Dear Self,

Taking care of home is an important part of caring for myself.

Tidying, cleaning, doing the bills, maintenance and all of that are a representation of my commitment to creating a safe, comfortable, functioning space for myself to thrive in.

But I resist and avoid it. As if it is ‘instead’ of the things I want to do in the world instead of a foundation for them.

My learning of this particular lesson is a long, long arc.

Today is a good day to sit with and enjoy this opportunity to care for myself by caring for my space.

A clean house.

A clean house. Drawing Luke Hockley.

Dear Self,

The feeling of a clean house is well worth the effort of cleaning it up…so why don't I spend more time regularly cleaning it up?

My attitude/approach to this form of self-care is frustrating…I really do wish I could raise the bar on this.

I wonder why I don’t?

I do find there is nothing like visitors to get me to act!

But the real beneficiary is me.

I must remember that.

Truly, madly, deeply.

Truly, madly, deeply. Drawing Luke Hockley.

Dear Self,

Once upon a time I hung out with a group of friends and, even though we were all well out of high school at the time (like, well out of high school), we felt compelled to act like joyful children and create a lip-sync-dance performance to Savage Garden’s song Truly, madly, deeply.

For all involved this was a truly remarkable thing.

I’m sure it was also as life changing for the audience as it was for us, the creators.

To feel this sense of playfulness with a group of adults is a special thing indeed.

We had this opportunity because we were all working together to deliver a program called the Future Makers Fellowship. Which was run by the Centre for Sustainability Leadership, affectionately known as CSL.

CSL has all but closed in its current form. Today we gathered to say goodbye.

We came together to do some of the most important work that I have been involved in. Helping people navigate their inner worlds so that they can grasp their full potential and apply it to the most significant challenges we face as a species.

The fact that, whilst we did this deep and meaningful work, we also laughed and played and carried joy in our hearts, well that fact is proof that what we were doing was really as good as we all had hoped it might be.

Farewell CSL.

I’m so pleased you helped us all find each other.

Love

Luke

How to do a weekend?

How to do a weekend? Drawing Luke Hockley.

How to do a weekend? Drawing Luke Hockley.

Dear Self,

I am surprised to find myself saying that structure is very important to me.

I seem to really need to know what is going to happen and what will be followed by what. How long this will happen before I move onto that.

This structure is most important when I am working on my own and I have no external need to be somewhere or do something. I find in this situation I like to break the day up into chunks of time and then agree with myself what it is I am going to do in those chunks. Otherwise I sit around just doing nothing (on the internet) and then wondering where the day went and why I didn’t get any of the things done I wanted to get done.

Or…

I am on holiday and the only structure I need is to make sure I eat 3 meals a day. But in that situation, I really let all the threads go. Time changes, there is space all day. I find hours pass without me noticing. I enjoy this kind of time immensely…but it is hard to come back from and it’s not healthy for me all the time. I get a bit mushy and don’t like how that feels.

I think I get confused about how to do a weekend, a rest day…a day that is neither full on holiday nor a creative working day. I can end up a little in between the two things and not really feeling rested or productive.

It’s a bit confusing.

Do this thing completely. Drawing Luke Hockley.

Dear Self,

I find myself continually trying to be finished the activity I am currently doing.

Trying to be anywhere but right here doing this thing.

It is a particularly unhealthy way to be at a computer for me.

How many times will I come back to this lesson?

Do or don’t do.

This thing now. That’s all that there is.

Do this thing completely.

And then, when it is done, do the next thing.

Dear Self,

I could do with a week at home.

Not doing anything in particular.

Tidying up the edges of life.

Sitting in the sun and having cups of tea.

I had this kind of day yesterday.

One day just isn’t enough.

Maybe two days in a row is what I should be aiming for?

Life administration. Drawing Luke Hockley

Dear Self,

A pile of paper.

Bills and receipts. The shopping. The washing. Cleaning the bathroom. Vacuuming the floor. Cooking.

Did I mention cleaning?

This stuff is critical.

But I can resent it if I am not careful.

When it is done it sets the foundation in place for everything else.

All I have to do is keep my eye on the prize and enjoy each task for what it is.

Easy. Right?
